Shoulder Pain

Are you one of the ten per cent of the population whose life is affected by shoulder pain or dysfunction?

Shoulder injuries are one of the top 5 commonly treated at 4 Life Physiotherapy. Our therapists are trained in the latest assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques for shoulder injuries, and pride themselves on not just treating your symptoms, but addressing the underlying causes of your injury to give you the best possible outcome and help prevent injury recurrence.

The shoulder is a complex joint containing many potentially pain-producing structures. It is the most mobile joint in the body and is subject to a high degree of repetition, load and forces in our sporting, working and daily lives. Unfortunately, this mobility comes at the cost of stability, and as such, the shoulder is prone to injury.

Causes

Shoulder injuries can be the result of gradual wear and tear or from a sudden acute injury or trauma. Many factors can contribute to or increase your risk of sustaining a shoulder injury. These include:

  • Repetitive overhead or reaching activities, particularly under load
  • Rapid acceleration / deceleration – i.e. throwing motion
  • Vibration exposure – tool use
  • Poor posture – rounded shoulders, hunched upper back, stiff thoracic spine
  • Poor shoulder & scapula biomechanics / muscle imbalances / poor technique
  • Joint laxity
  • Sports / work history
  • Increasing age
  • Previous traumatic shoulder injury – dislocation, AC joint injury, labral / tendon tears

Assessment

Our Physiotherapy team understands the complexity of the shoulder joint and the need to undertake a thorough orthopaedic assessment to differentiate between the common shoulder complaints that we see:

Repetitive overhead or reaching activities, particularly under load

Rapid acceleration/deceleration – i.e. throwing motion

Vibration exposure – tool use

Poor posture – rounded shoulders, hunched upper back, stiff thoracic spine

Poor shoulder & scapula biomechanics / muscle imbalances / poor technique

Joint laxity

Sports/work history

Increasing age

Previous traumatic shoulder injury – dislocation, AC joint injury, labral / tendon tears

By undertaking a thorough assessment of your shoulder injury, our Physiotherapy team will identify the underlying contributing factors that have led to your injury and develop an individual treatment plan.
